Brief History of the District
Kwun Tong was previously a major manufacturing center. Over the past two decades, the many industrial buildings in the area were restored to create office spaces. With hundreds of companies, artists and other professionals settling into these facilities, Kwun Tong has become one of the largest business districts in Hong Kong.
Looking Back on Day #1
Stepping off the train for the first time at the Kwun Tong MTR station, I immediately felt the excitement of the historical district. I was on my way to start my summer internship in The Wave’s marketing department, and was dressed very incorrectly for the humid weather. Thankfully, the district’s vibrant and energetic atmosphere was a perfect distraction from the heat. I joined the large mass of people heading in the direction of their various companies, strategically trying to navigate the sidewalks that were filled with street vendors and kiosks. I could not be more excited to join the bustling area for the next two months.
Food, Food, Food!
I think it’s safe to say that your taste buds will never be bored in this district. Here you will find a perfect blend of local classics mixed with international cuisines and popular chain restaurants. My personal favorite so far has been traditional dim sum, but I have absolutely loved every piece of sushi and every cup of bubble tea as well. My goal for the rest of these two months: to continue finding delicious hole-in-the-wall places to eat. It definitely won’t be difficult in Kwun Tong!
Time is flying in this beautiful city. I have officially added Hong Kong to my list of favorite places around the world. Kwun Tong in particular will always be special to me thanks to my wonderful coworkers at The Wave. Their generous and patient personalities through hundreds of questions and various restaurants have allowed me to truly get a sense of the local culture. I have until the end of July to keep exploring, but I have already started planning my trip back to see The Wave community and this wonderful district again.
